Integral Colour

.

Integral colours are synthetic oxide pigments that do not fade in concrete. They should be weighed out in proportion to cement weight (not total mix weight!). Maximum recommended loading is 10% of cement weight, though this high of a loading is usually only done in bag mixes (ie. 680g per bag of concrete countertop mix). Typical ready-mix loading is in the range of 1% - 5% (about 3kg - 15kg per meter). Colours can look washed out under 2% loading. There is very little benefit of going over 5%, pigments hit a maximum effectiveness around this point.

Fading, wet concrete vs dry concrete - Integral coloured concrete will lighten as it cures just like uncoloured concrete. Even with a high loading of pigment the result is dull and chalky. Wetting the concrete will bring back the dark vibrant look of when it was first poured. A wet-look sealer (ie. solvent based acrylics) will hold this look for a couple years. If you feel that your colour has faded, it's more likely that you have sealer issues (worn down, flaking off and/or applied too thick).

Colour swatches: compare apples to apples - Vieira Integral Colour swatches were made from cured, un-sealed samples. Some other brands have darker swatches for lower pigment loadings - these will not cure out this colour without use of a wet-look sealer.  When selecting an integral colour, be sure to pay attention to the loading (ie. weight per meter).
